What’s in the home
An open plan Fraemohs log cabin with double -glazing, erected in 1984 as the second homebuilt in the village. Ground floor has a new kitchen & carpet, lounge/dining area with sofa, a bedroom with Queen size bed; a single divan; desk; overhead fan; bathroom and separate toilet; & hand held fire extinguisher. The mezzanine floor has 5 single beds. Duvets, pillows, and blankets are supplied for all beds. Outside carport covers a bin of logs with more stacked inside the shed at the back behind a black plastic cover. Snow shovel and a small hand axe to make kindling can be located inside the carport. No Wifi available– use this as an opportunity to unplug and reset OR use your own device/data to connect to the mobile network.

The kitchen is well supplied with an oven, fridge/freezer, microwave and all the basic necessities (toaster, kettle, cutlery, crockery, glassware, pots & pans etc). The bathroom has a shower, heater, drying rack, pegs and washing machine with instructions. Small collection of books (incl. First Aid manual), magazines, CD player, family games, plus an Information File with articles of local interest. A log burner with a child proof guard provides good heating.

What to bring
Your own sheets (Queen/single), pillow cases, sleeping bags, additional blankets, towels, dish/tea towels, toilet rolls, matches, candles, torches, CDs, clothing (temps can vary btw -13to +35C), tennis/golf gear, mountain/bikes, skiis, walk shoes, food, drink, bags for rubbish, BBQ. If exploring Cave Stream, each person needs a torch, appropriate clothing and to take heed of signage at the entrance. Bring extra food for min of 3 days in case of emergency (eg.snowfall, earthquake, slips, closed Passes, Alpine fault R8 rupture). No dogs or pets please.

Emergency Kit
A plastic bin containing 4 plastic containers of water, candles, matches and a camping stove for emergency use (eg. water/electricity off, freezing pipes, earthquakes etc) has been left under the study desk. Please only use in emergencies (Village Hall is the Emergency Centre).

How to get there
The Village is 100 kms west of Christchurch on State Highway 7. It takes about 1¼ hrs via Old West Coast Rd or 45 mins travelling eastwards from Arthur’s Pass/West Coast. You may need to check road conditions over the Porters Pass (open/closed; snow chains) with AA or Springfield garage before you leave. The Village lies 10 mins beyond the Pass on the left side of the main road. Turn in at the entrance, take first left (Trelissick Loop) and Porter Place is first on left. Cosy chalet is beyond a two-storey house at the turning area and looks out over the main highway.

General background information
Castle Hill Village is located 700 meters up in an alpine basin, which is surrounded by mountain scenery that can be enjoyed throughout the year. It has been developing since the early 1980’s, has several community facilities (9-hole golf course, tennis court, small basketball court, playground, access to 45+ kms of walking/mountain bike tracks), and a number of permanent residents. Note: The nearest shop (open 7am-7.30pm), petrol station and public telephone can be found 33 kms away in Springfield (30 mins drive). Please be aware that there are no cafes/shops etc in the village. The nearest eateries are at Bealey HotelArthurs Pass and Springfield; the nearest small shops are at Arthurs Pass and Springfield, while the nearest supermarket is in Darfield; you should aim to be self-sufficient for the duration of your stay.The Village now has a mobile Village café at the entrance and also cell phone coverage.
